He was born on July 21st, 1899, in Chicago. His father was a doctor, a hunter and a fisherman
whereas his mother was a musician. Like his father, he loved fishing and he loved relating his
hobbies. In this manner, he became a journalist at the "Kansas City Star". |
In May 1925, he met Fitzgerald in Paris, with whom he became friend.
After his father's suicide, he moved to Key West, in Florida, in 1930 and wrote
"Death in the afternoon". In 1936, he went to Spain and entered the Republican Army. He drew his inspiration
from that time to write: "The snows of Kilimandjaro" (1936),
"To have and have not "(1937), "For whom the bell tolls" (1940). He still moved to a big house in The
Havana, but he came back rapidly to Paris in 1944. In 1950, he wrote his last love story :
"Beyond the river and behind the trees". Then, he wrote "The old man and the sea" (1952), before
getting the Nobel Price in 1954. |
