Ice hockey in Germany                            by Tim (Nov 19, 2005)

Germany has a first and a second league. The first league is called: DEL (Deutsche Eishockey Liga = German Hockey League). 14 teams play in the DEL . The best of them are the Eisbären Berlin,Augsburg Panther, DEG Metro Stars and the Iserlohn Roosters.

Icehockey is played on ice with a puck. Each team plays with 6 men on the ice, including one goalie (see picture below). Every player has clothes with spezial stuffing in it, because they play with a hard puck, which can hurt badly.

Every team in the league plays four games against each other.

Every game is 60 minutes long. But there are three periods and each of them is 20 minutes long. But all the time the game is longer than 60 minutes, because if a player fouls another player the time will be stopped. If a player does a very bad foul he must leave the game for two or five minutes.

If the two teams have the same number of goals they must go for the penalty shoot-out. Then are just two players on the ice - the goalie and a player.

The player tries to score a goal. The team with most goals after five shots is the winner.

Ice hockey is really a fantastic sport. I also love the ice hockey club in our region, the Iserlohn Roosters. Sometimes they play really bad, but I always go there to see them winning. I hope they won't have to go to the second league next year.

Hi Tim,
I think your article is interesting. You show us something about the German ice hockey league. But I think the Iserlohn Roosters are not very good.Winning a match, the Iserlohn Roosters are happy because they won 3 points and they get closer not to go into the second league. All in all I like the article.

I think ice hockey is a hard sport. Although they wear softy clothes the players can be hurt. I hope Iserlohn won't fall into the second league because then you can't watch it on tv.
