The meat industry in Germany

by Mathias (Nov 19, 2005)

First it is important to say that the Meat Industry in Germany will get bigger and bigger. There are big companies like "Westfleisch" and "Tönnies". Companies like those are very big, they slaughter about 45.000 to 70.000 pigsa week. That makes the quality bad but the prize little. Because of this indusry little slaughterhouses (2.000 pigs a week) canīt make the same prize and are extinguished.

So the meat buisness is for little companies a hard buisness. But normally the Meat Industry is hard work, hand work. The butchers have to slaughter, to carve and to process the pigs and cows.

Here you can see butchers carving the animals:

And here butchers in a production room:

Hygiene is very important in Germany, and most of the companies are hygienic. Here you can see everybody with white clothes:

But where do all the pigs come from?

In big companies the animals come from everywhere, for example Poland, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Germany...
But in little companies the quality is safety because of groups like "Pigour". Pigour is a group of farmers who sell pigs.

They have instructions how they should breed their pigs, such as big houses for the animals, just the best food (no GM-food), donīt push the animals...

A happy pig with good food.

Pigour.

At the end I can say, if you buy your meat at a little butcher`s you can enjoy it. But donīt buy your food in a super market.

Hello Mathias, I like your article because I agree with you. My family and I wouldnīt buy meat in a supermarket. And your text is interesting too.
