Volleyball is a game where you have to play a ball over a net. You play in teams of 6. You have got three contacts to get the ball over the net in a move. The ball mustn’t touch the ground, the wall nor the roof. You can play the ball with every part of your body, but most people use the basic techniques: bumset and set or attacking techniques: attack, service, block.
If the ball touches the ground or something different except the player, there’s one point for the other team. You have to play sets where one team has to get 25 points with 2 points distance to the other team. You have to win 3 sets to win the match. Young people play matches with 2 won sets to win the match. I think volleyball is good for people, because volleyball is a team sport. In team sports you learn to coopaerate with others and to talk to each other to get to know what’s the best way to solve a problem. But why is volleyball so different to other team sports?

Volleyball is a game which you can only play if you know the basic techniques. If you can’t play this, the game doesn’t make sense and the fun is very low. But many people don’t know what real volleyball played by professional athletes is. I would like you to go to a real volleyball match and watch it. It will be a match with lots of moves and with many difficult rules. The rules for the game are very much. But each team has their own rules for each player in the team, too. You have to learn rules, because each player in the team has his own position and has to react to different situations. That’s why volleyball is so different to other sports: Think about problems, learn rules and react to situations. Another aspect is practice. If you don’t practise very often, you will be a very bad player and success won’t be there. Professional athletes train 10 hours a week with the ball. But additionally they have to go into a fitness room to become strong and they have to go jogging or go swimming for their endurance. Another aspect for young people is, if they play in a volleyball team and train very often, they don’t have time for bad things, which young people often do, and they learn to set priorities. |
